According to a report issued earlier in 2019 by Eaze, a platform for legal cannabis, female consumers of legal cannabis products almost doubled last year. Eaze tracked its database of almost half a million cannabis consumers and found more women than men entered the marketplace in 2018. They predict that by 2022, men and women will consume cannabis in one form or another at equal rates.

Eaze also found after culling their database that men and women have different product preferences.

Particularly, interest in CBD products grew faster among women than men. Over 90 percent of Eaze’s female consumers primarily purchased products with high CBD content. They also found that female Baby Boomers made up 21 percent of all CBD consumers.

Another report with slightly different findings

Headset, a cannabis analytics company, performed market research to determine how gender influences consumers’ behaviors and preferences. In their recent report, they found that flower and vapor pens are still the most popular products bought by both men and women.

As you can see in the above chart, more women than men favor edibles, pre-rolled products, and drops. But by far, the majority purchased flower and vapor pens more than other products.

However, growth in certain categories between 2017 and 2018 shows that female cannabis consumers are more interested in drops and topicals.

One theory is that women are more interested in the wellness aspect of weed than they are the psychoactive.

Eaze’s report substantiates this theory. In fact, CBD consumers nearly doubled in 2018 over 2017. They found women, particularly Baby Boomers, are interested in CBD products for anxiety, sleep, and pain relief.

What is it about CBD products that women love?

One reason is that CBD products are more beginner friendly. As female cannabis consumers grow in numbers, they’re searching out products that don’t overwhelm a beginning weed user, such as those high in CBD and low in THC.

Retailers find vapor pens with names like Calm, Happy, or Relief are outselling products named after a specific cannabis strain. Wellness is a big factor in the explosion of cannabis use, particularly CBD products. For example, the following chart shows the wellness effects CBD consumers are gaining:

CBD use has a variety of wellness targets, such as:

  • Reducing or eliminating tobacco and alcohol use
  • Reducing or eliminating the need for prescription and over-the-counter pain medications
  • Relieving anxiety, stress, and depression
  • Helping resolve sleep issues without prescription medications

As marijuana becomes legal in more states, women are discovering they can reduce their reliance on prescription and over-the-counter medications. They’re also finding CBD-based products can be an effective part of their beauty regimen.

The theory that women cannabis consumers are interested in wellness fits the trends. Headset’s research found women over-indexed on the following products:

  • Humboldt Apothecary 3:1 Calm CBD Tincture with 3 mg of CBD for every 1 of THC.
  • Papa and Barkley’s 3:1 Releaf Balm for muscle pain and inflammation.
  • Milk Chocolate Blueberry Terra Bites by Kiva, which are higher in THC, but helps those chocolate cravings.

Best cannabis products for women

Experts in the cannabis industry can help women find weed products for a variety of women’s health issues and their beauty needs. Here’s a list of women’s issues and products to help combat them.

PMS and cramps

Women have been searching for relief from menstrual symptoms for centuries. Savvy marijuana manufacturers are creating products that target bloating, cramps, back pain, migraines, mood swings, hot flashes, and fatigue.

One product is Foria Relief. It’s a vaginal suppository using CBD to relax muscles and relieve pain without the “high” you get from weed. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, women are twice as likely to suffer from anxiety issues than men. Before you jump in and smoke pot to relieve your anxiety and stress, understand that marijuana has different effects based on the strain, environmental factors, and your tolerance level.

One way for women to relieve debilitating anxiety and stress is through CBD products known to counteract feelings of anxiety without the psychoactive properties that can sometimes increase anxiety.

Here are three products to try:

  • Leef Thrival CBD Extract. Using a special cold-pressed fermentation process, this product has the cleanest form of CBD extract available. Called “Liquid Gold” by some, it relieves symptoms of anxiety and stress and even helps relieve aches and pains.

Depression

As with anxiety, women are twice as likely to suffer from depression then men. A simple way to lift your mood is to light up. Sativa strains help get your creative juices flowing and rouse you out of your funk.

Tree Lotion 420 with Lavender Chamomile doesn’t give you a “high” but offers relief from depression. This fantastic lotion offers a topical solution for those who don’t want to smoke pot or get high.

Insomnia

It’s not uncommon for women to suffer from insomnia thanks to a lighter sleep cycle easily disrupted. For women who don’t want to turn to sleeping pills and their side effects, you can light up an indica strain like Magic Factory The Grape, Tokyo OG, Cream of the Crop Fruit Loops OG, and others.

But for those who’d rather not smoke, edible products offer the soothing properties of CBD that help you get to sleep and stay asleep. Here are two products to try:

  • Slugworth’s Candy. Slugworth’s makes a variety of candy CBD products that make taking a dose of much-needed insomnia relief as easy as eating a gummy worm—and just as tasty. Visit a cannabis retailer and discuss which candy will help you conquer your insomnia once and for all.
  • Selects CBD Lavender Drops. A calming blend, Selects CBD Lavender Drops help you relax and unwind at the end of the day so you can prepare for a long night of restful sleep. The use of essential oils and pure extract CBD makes this a powerful solution to fight insomnia.

Beauty and skin care

CBD isn’t just for health conditions and issues. It’s also an excellent addition to your skin care and beauty regimen. Besides anti-inflammatory properties, CBD also helps fight acne, moisturize and hydrate your skin, and even fight wrinkles and signs of aging.

These beauty and skin care products are becoming so mainstream, they’re now being sold on Sephora’s website. You can choose from 14 different products that target a variety of skin care needs like moisturizers, body creams, age defying serums, and more.

Many women find that CBD products offer all-natural ingredients packed with phytonutrient, antioxidants, and fatty acids that result in a smooth, radiant complexion. Whether you need a product to fight acne and blemishes, to reduce or reverse the signs of aging, or to moisturize and even out your skin tone, there’s a CBD skin care and beauty product for your needs. In fact, you can buy bath bombs, bath salts, body wash, lip gloss, mascara, and more.

Allure magazine’s website has an interesting article titled “The 17 Best CBD Skin-Care Products to Try Right Now.” It has plenty of information about each product and where you can buy it.

Final thoughts

Until recently, the marijuana industry had focused more heavily on men because they were the vast majority of weed users. But with women becoming more conscious of its health and wellness benefits, more women are turning to cannabis products.

Women’s cannabis products focus on gender-specific issues because several of the items are made by women for women. More importantly, savvy cannabis industry leaders are tapping into this growing market and looking to develop products that appeal to women of all demographics. As more states go legal, competition in the cannabis market is skyrocketing. It will be essential for producers, manufacturers, and dispensaries to design products and marketing strategies that address women’s issues.

The push to innovate and meet the diverse needs of a larger market will hopefully lead to better products for all and a more inclusive environment for women in particular.
